Upstate began in 2009 when Astrid Chastka and Kalen Kaminski were looking to start a line of vintage-inspired wraps and scarves. They stumbled upon a shibori tapestry that inspired them to create the collection of wearable art that has evolved into Upstate. Astrid and Kalen have developed their own take on shibori using similar techniques used in 8th century AD in Japan and integrating their own developed techniques from modern day. They hand dye every single Upstate garment in micro batches of 5 or 6 in their Brooklyn studios. For future seasons, Upstate will explore both extravagant and utilitarian shapes. Each piece will be able to be worn above or below outerwear and as always, in a variety of ways. Upstate will be introducing a new geometric print and offering a men's collection.
